This is Chopin’s first polonaise, dating from 1817. A careful listener will easily detect that from out of the opening section  of the B flat major Polonaise there emerges the swashbucklingly Sarmatian – perhaps even slightly coarse – style of Kurpiński, and from out of the middle section, from the trio, the distinguished and nostalgic style of Ogiński.

Analysis of the B flat major Polonaise reveals an abundance of those phrases and devices from which polonaises were ‘pieced together’ in those days, like castles from building blocks. The form also adheres to the current convention: we have a typical dance, with the trio in the relative key (here, the elegiac G minor), preceded by an opening fanfare. Yet this music was written by a child. Well, not actually written down, but put together on the piano, since the Polonaise was notated by Chopin’s father, Mikołaj. In spite of everything, in spite of the fact that this might undoubtedly be called ‘heard’ music, there is something unusual and exceptional in this childish work: some uniquely authentic childish naivety, modesty and simplicity.
