The Moderato only came to light in 1910. For nigh on seventy years, the manuscript of this ‘Album leaf’ (known as a Moderato in E major) lay in the album of one of Chopin’s aristocratic Russian pupils, Anna Sheremetev. The leaf was signed and dated: ‘Paris 1843’.

The Moderato is really nothing more than a note for a melodic idea. It might just as well have found its way into some larger work (with an episodic function), such as the Allegro de concert. It is a twenty-bar miniature couched in a lofty, declamatory style. It proceeds in the rhythm of a songful march of a character close to an elegiac duma.
