The second of the Op. 63 Mazurkas is in the nostalgic key of F minor. It is one great sigh, uttered through the exquisitely beautiful and noble phrase of a kujawiak. The middle section, in A flat major, brings a brief rousing, an attempt to pull free of the somnolent atmosphere. The simplicity of the reprise form obliges the opening theme to return. A nostalgic mood leads to the fading of the melody, in a descending chromaticised phrase.

When listening to the F minor Mazurka, we are inclined to concur with Józef Chomiński, when he calls Chopin’s mazurkas his ‘personal confessions’. A hundred years previously, a similar intuition was displayed by the essayist and diarist Wilhelm von Lenz, who expressed it in the language of his epoch: ‘The mazurkas are the mirror of his soul’.
