The final etude of the set brings a plenitude of piano sound and an irresistible impression of elements that are all but uncontrollable. The dynamics swell to the utmost. The periodically crashing waves of figuration are penetrated by a lofty, heroic theme.

The ultimate victory is beyond doubt. In the last bars, the minor key is vanquished by the eighteen-fold intoning of a major third. This final accent, this strong closure of the set of 12 Etudes, gives us pause. Chopin did not succeed in keeping to the order of keys that he had originally intended. But it was replaced by dramatic expression. Its course, from the vaporised sonorities of the opening ‘Aeolian Harp’ Etude to the heroic blows of the final Etude, transforming the tragic C minor into the victorious C major, seems quite deliberately planned.
