Writer, publicist, scenarist, activist in the democratic opposition during the times of PRL, one of the most interesting personalities of the XXth century Polish Culture.

He studied Polish Philology (started in 1927) on the Warsaw University, and made his literary debut in 1932. He is the author of famous novel Popiół i Diament" [Ash and Diamond]. 

In 1936 he became the member of the Polish Literats Trade Union. Duirng the  German occupation he stayed in Warsaw and took an active part in the conspiratorial literary life. After the second world war he settled in Krakow, where between1946 and 1947 he worked as a president of the Krakow Department of the Association of Writers.  

In 1948 he moved to Szczecin and in 1950 he became a member of the comunist party and he was honoured with the Order of the Flag of Work and Class. 

In march 1964 he signed the Letter of 34 - the protest of writers and scientists to protect the freedom of speech.Because of his actions he joined the group of authors whose works were forbidden to be published. In 1968 he received the Jurzykowski Foundation prize in New York. Between 1977 and 1981 he was a member of the editorial board of "Zapis" - a periodical published outside the censorship.
