A Norwegian pianist who studied at Bergen Conservatory with Jiři Hlinka. Founder of the Rosendal Chamber Music Festival, long-serving artistic director of the Risør Festival of Chamber Music and music director of the Ojai Music Festival in California (2012), he is a member of the Gramophone Hall of Fame (2013) and holds honorary doctorates from the Juilliard School in New York (2016) and the University of Bergen (2017). He has worked with many orchestras, including the Vienna, Munich, London, Berlin, Boston, NHK (Japan) and Los Angeles philharmonic orchestras, as well as the Tonhalle Zurich, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Bavarian Radio Symphony, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and New World Symphony. One of his most significant achievements was The Beethoven Journey, a special tour on which he gave around 230 concerts in 108 cities in 27 countries over four seasons, presenting piano music by Beethoven with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra under his baton. Released in 2016 was a documentary film about that project, Concerto – A Beethoven Journey, by the British director Phil Grabsky. Andsnes has recorded more than 30 discs of chamber, solo and orchestral music for EMI Classics, winning eight Grammy nominations and six Gramophone Awards. He now records for Sony Classical. In 2017, a Sibelius disc was released, which includes arrangements by Andsnes. He is a commander of the Royal Norwegian Order of Saint Olav and the prestigious Peer Gynt Prize for outstanding achievements in the field of culture, as well as the Gilmore Artist Award and the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Instrumentalist Award. He gives masterclasses at the Piano Academy in Bergen founded by Jiří Hlinka. In the 2017/2018 season, he is artist-in-residence of the New York Philharmonic.
