The Russian pianist and teacher Vera Gornostaeva began her musical education aged eight at the Central School of Music attached to the Moscow Conservatory. She continued her studies at the Conservatory with Harry Neuhaus. A prize-winner of the Prague International Piano Competition (1950), she was a very active concert pianist and soloist of the Moscow Philharmonic.

Gornostaeva was also an accomplished pedagogue. She taught at the Gnessin Music Academy and then Moscow Conservatory. She trained many prize-winners of international competitions around the world, including Ivo Pogorelich, Dina Yoffe, Sergei Babayan and Lukas Geniušas. She also gave masterclasses in Poland (Warsaw, Duszniki-Zdrój), Italy, German, France, Switzerland, the UK, Japan (Yamaha masterclass) and the US.

She was also a music journalist and author of Two Hours after the Concert. She led the series of television broadcasts Open Piano and was chair of the Moscow Musicians' Union.

She was a jurist of international music competitions around the world, including in Bolzano, Leeds and Hamamatsu. In 2005, she sat on the jury of the 15th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw.
