Gerald Abraham

The British musicologist, journalist and music critic Gerald Abraham was a professor of musicology at Liverpool University (1947–1962) and a music critic and correspondent of The Daily Telegraph. From 1935, he worked as an editor with the Radio Times and then The Listener, before joining the BBC as head of the Gramophone Department. Whilst working in radio, he became committed to the popularisation of Eastern European music, and he was interested in Slavic and especially Russian music.

Author of one of the first synthesising studies of Chopin’s style, he took part in the First International Musicological Congress devoted to the works of Chopin (Warsaw, 1960)
