Georges Bizet

Georges Bizet

Georges Bizet

*25 X 1838 Paryż, †3 VI 1875 Bougival k. Paryża

French composer. He studied piano (with A. F. Marmontel), organ (with F. Benoist) and composition (with J. F. Halévy) at the Paris Conservatory. During his studies he composed his first works, including Symphony in C major. In 1857 he was awarded the Prix de Rome.

Bizet might have surpassed all the many composers active in France in the last third of the 19th century had it not been for his untimely death at the age of 36. His early operas did not receive recognition. Carmen, the best opera of Bizet, first performed (without success) three months before his death, has become one of the most popular operas of any age.
