Isaac Albéniz

*29 V 1860 Camprodon, †18 V 1909 Cambo-les-Bains

The Spanish composer and pianist Isaac Albéniz made his first public appearance at the age of four in Barcelona. When he was six, he became a student of Antoine François Marmontel in Paris. He gave an impressive audition to study music at the Paris Conservatoire, but although his talents were recognised he was too young to enter. As a teenager, he was a world-renowned concert pianist. With the financial help of King Alfonso XII, Albéniz began studying at the Brussels Conservatoire, yet hHis greatest ambition at the time was to study with Ferenc Liszt. So at the age of twenty he left Brussels for Budapest in order to fulfil his dream.

As a composer, Albéniz incorporated elements of traditional Spanish folk music into his compositions. His principal works include Suite española, Op. 47 (Granada, Cataluña, Sevilla, Cuba), Cantos de España, Seis Danzas Españolas and Rapsodia Española, Op. 70 for piano and orchestra. He also wrote songs and operas.
