When he was three, Michel Dalberto was introduced to Vlado Perlemuter, a favourite pupil of the late Alfred Cortot, and entered his class at the Paris Coservatoire in 1968. Since winning two of the most important international competitions, the Clara Haskil Prize 1975 and the Leeds International Piano Competition in 1978, he has been invited to cooperate with such orchestras as Orchestre de Paris, Concertgebouw Orchestra, Orchestre National de France, Montreal Symphony, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Santa-Cecilia and Wiener Symphoniker.

Nowadays he performs with Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Residentie Orkest, Liege Orchestre, Maggio Musicale, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic and with Saint Petersburg Philharmonic conducted by Kurt Masur, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Charles Dutoit, Carl Davis, Andrew Davis, Yuri Temirkanov and Erich Leinsdorf.

He is the only living pianist, who has recorded all the works of Schubert (14 albums released by Denon). He records for Sony BMG. For 15 years he had been working as an Artistic Director of the Academy-Festival des Arcs in Savoie (France). Since 1991 he is the Chairman of the Jury of the Clara Haskil Competition. He also coaches a selected number of students at Imola's Accademia Pianistica
