Miles Davis - American jazz trumpeter and composer, one of the greatest leaders in the history of jazz. He began studying trumpet in his early teens. Since 1944 he attended the prestigious Julliard School of Music in New York. There he participated in jam sessions with masters such as Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. Davis and Parker recorded together often during the years 1945-48. During 1947 Davis came top in a DownBeat poll and continued to play and record with many greats of jazz, including Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, Illinois Jacquet and Gerry Mulligan. He also founded his own band, Nonet. At the turn of the decade into 1950 an association with Gerry Mulligan and arranger Gil Evans ushered in The Birth of the Cool (released byCapitol Records), which began a new style of jazz - cool. Since 1969 Davis worked mostly with electronics. He was also a composer of film soundtracks.
