Shaun Choo

Shaun Choo (born in Singapore in 1991) commenced his piano studies at the age of 7. At 14, he was awarded the Diploma in Piano Performance (DipRSM) from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.

At 15, Shaun Choo was accepted into the Leopold Mozart Institute, a division within the Mozarteum University in Salzburg that specializes in the musical development of gifted young talents. Since then, he has been under the guidance of Professor Karl-Heinz Kämmerling and Professor Andreas Weber. He has performed extensively in Europe, in countries such as Spain, Holland, Italy, Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary and Poland. He was also broadcasted on the Suedwestrundfunk Deutsche radio station.

Shaun Choo has performed as a soloist with various internationally renowned orchestras, such as the Lindau Festival Orchestra, Suedwestdeustche Philharmonie Konstanz, Mozarteum Symphony Orchestra Salzburg, Niederbarischer Philharmonie Passau/Landshut/Straubing, National Symphony Orchestra China, China Broadcast Orchestra, Singapore Festival Orchestra and Leipzig Academic Orchestra.

Shaun Choo has also been invited to perform at various official functions, such as the AEC Congress 2006, Asia's largest exhibition, CommunicAsia 2007 in Singapore, the combined French, German and Italian Rotary Clubs meeting in Avignon, France, BCRT/BMBF 2008 Workshop Berlin, and özbf-Kongress Salzburg 2008. He was also invited to the Mexico National Music University to appear in masterclasses and concerts. One of the highlights of his University career was to have been specially chosen by Sir André Previn to perform Beethoven's first concerto with the Mozarteum University Orchestra. The 2009/2010 season included several notable performances: in the Schwetzinger Festspiele, the Century theater and National Concert Hall Beijing, Leipziger Gewandhaus and Chopin's birthplace in Warsaw, Poland.

This period has also seen him win several first prizes in international piano competitions:

He was awarded second place in the 21st "Flame" International Competition in Paris 2010 (April), the 2009 Blüthner Golden Tone Award Piano Competition in Vienna, and third place in the 2009 Singapore National Piano Competition.

Since his enlistment into National Service on March 2011, he has been contributing to the local music scene in Singapore, featuring on Mediacorp Channel Okto's "Knockout" arts show, performing for the Red Cross Society, and even during camp for the Signals Formation Cohort. His next concerts will be held at the NUS University Cultural Centre and School of the Arts.

Shaun Choo is a current recipient of the Singapore National Arts Council Artistic Bursary and has also been sponsored by the "sic itur ad astra foundation" from Liechtenstein.
