Harald Krebs obtained his PhD in music theory from Yale University in 1980. He joined the music faculty at the University of Victoria, Canada in 1986, where he is Professor and head of the theory section. He is the author or editor of several books and editions, and has published widely on the tonal and rhythmic structure of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century music in Canadian, American, and European journals and in numerous collections of essays. His book Fantasy Pieces: Metrical Dissonance in the Music of Robert Schumann (Oxford, 1999) won the Society for Music Theory's Wallace Berry Award for a distinguished book in music theory. He has served as vice president of the Society for Music Theory (2003-05), and as member of the editorial boards of the journals Music Theory Spectrum, Theoria, Canadian University Music Review, and Indiana Theory Review
