She graduated with honours in 1971 from the State College of Music in Poznań, where she studied conducting with Witold Krzemiński. In 1968, while still a student, she founded the chamber orchestra which in 1977 became the Polish Radio and Television Chamber Orchestra and later the Amadeus Chamber Orchestra of Polish Radio. She has been managing and artistic director of the orchestra from the very beginning. A laureate of the 1st All-Poland Conducting Competition in Katowice (1970), with her orchestra she won the Herbert von Karajan silver medal at the International Meeting of Young Orchestras in West Berlin (1976). In 1982, she was awarded the title ‘La Donna del Mondo’ (Woman of the World) for outstanding cultural, artistic and social achievements by the Saint Vincent International Culture Centre in Rome in association with UNESCO and the President of Italy. She was the first woman conductor to perform at Milan’s La Scala. She has released over 50 records with ‘Amadeus’. For Polish Television, she has recorded one hundred concerts and music programmes, and she has made numerous recordings for radio stations in Germany and Belgium, the BBC in London and CBC in Montreal, and also radio and television broadcasters in Mexico, France and Japan. Her artistic achievements include numerous premiere performances, including of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Goldberg Variations in Josef Koffler’s transcription for chamber orchestra and Krzysztof Knittel’s St Matthew Passion. She has sat on the jury of national and international music competitions, including Eurovision Young Musicians, the International Joseph Joachim Violin Competition in Hanover and the Tadeusz Ochlewski Composition Competition in Warsaw.
