The Polish pianist and pedagogue professor Jerzy Żurawlew (1886-1980) studied piano under the renowned Chopin expert Alexander Michałowski, who learned the secrets of Chopin's style from one of the composer's most brilliant pupils-Carl Mikuli.

For Żurawlew, teaching was a great passion, to which he devoted almost all his long life. Besides training several generations of pianists, he also willingly involved himself in community and cultural life, and in the musical world he was responsible for numerous initiatives, including the founding of an international piano competition with a mandatory Chopin repertory. Thanks to Żurawlew's tireless efforts, in 1927 the very first International Chopin Competition for Pianists was held in Warsaw. Today, after fifteen editions, this event can boast one of the longest traditions of any music competition.
