Maurizio Pollini – 1st Prize winner, 6th International Frederic Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw (1960). Maurizio Pollini was born into the family of a Milan architect. He displayed an obvious musical talent at an early age, but only began learning the piano systematically at the age of 11, initially with Professor Carlo Lonati and later with Carlo Vidusso. He graduated from the Milan Conservatoire in 1959 and embarked on composition studies.

As a student of the Conservatoire he entered several international piano competitions. In 1957, he took 2nd prize at the Music Performance Competition in Geneva; in 1958, he again took 2nd prize at the same competition (ex aequo with Ronaldo Turini, no 1st Prize was awarded). In 1959, he came 1st at the Ettore Pozzoli Competition in Seregno. Mr. Pollini's greatest triumph came in 1960 when he won the Chopin Competition in Warsaw. Already during his first appearance, playing the Impromptu in G flat major and two etudes (in C major and in A minor from Op. 10), he conquered the Warsaw audience and jury. When asked what he thought of the young Italian, Artur Rubinstein answered: "He already plays better than any of us – jurors!". Mr. Pollini again amazed the Warsaw public when after the Competition he performed Chopin's 24 Preludes.

Upon his return to Milan, eighteen-year-old Pollini established contact with Arturo Benedetti-Michelangeli, keen to develop his talent under this illustrious tutelage. Benedetti-Michelangeli agreed on the sole condition that Mr. Pollini suspend his concert career for a few years. Their co-operation lasted six months, during which time Mr. Pollini took six lessons with the master. After many years, reminiscing about that period, Mr. Pollini said: "Michelangeli taught me many useful things."

Unfortunately, Mr. Pollini had to interrupt his highly promising career due to a serious illness which required long-term treatment. He resumed performing only in 1966. In January and February that year he gave three recitals in Warsaw. The first programme included pieces by Chopin, Scriabin and Prokofiev; the second – works by Beethoven and Bartók. Pollini again amazed the Warsaw audience with, among others, his rendition of Beethoven's Hammerklavier Sonata. One critic wrote: "…most unusual was the Fugue, from which the young pianist eliminated almost all elements of piano showmanship, giving it an almost mystical feel and bringing it to an impressionistic conclusion, where with most performers only bravura and brute force dominate."

From 1966 to this day, Mr. Pollini has been developing his international concert career, appearing with the best orchestras and conductors in famous halls and at renowned festivals. Mr. Pollini is an exceptional and universal artist. He plays with equal success works by Chopin, Schubert, Schumann, Beethoven and Mozart on one hand, and Schoenberg, Boulez and Stockhausen on the other. Among contemporary pianists, he is certainly one of the outstanding personalities.

Mr. Pollini has been a Deutsche Grammophon artist for many years. His discography includes works of Chopin (complete Etudes and Preludes, a selection of Polonaises, Nocturnes, Impromptus and Mazurkas, the two sonatas – B flat minor and B minor – Concerto in E minor, and other pieces), Beethoven (compete piano concertos, a selection of sonatas and others works), Schubert (Wanderer Fantasy in C major, Sonatas, Impromptus etc.), Liszt (Sonata in B minor), Brahms (piano concertos, Piano Quintet in F minor), Mozart (concertos), Rossini, Manzoni, Schoenberg and Bartók.

Mr. Pollini participated in the jury of the Concorso Internazionale Pianistico Premio Dino Ciani in Milan, in 1975.
