Mitsuko Uchida – 2nd Prize winner, 8th International Frederic Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw (1970). Mitsuko Uchida began learning piano at the Toho Music School in Tokyo with Prof. Sadako Matsuoka (1955–1961). She gave her first public concert at the age of 12, in 1960. In 1961, she left for Vienna where she studied at the Musikhochschule with Richard Hauser for seven years. She graduated with honours in 1968. She then continued her studies taking private tuition from Wilhelm Kempff and Stefan Askenase.

Ms. Uchida participated in eight international piano competitions, winning awards in six. She came 3rd in Munich (1966), 10th in Brussels (1968), 1st in Vienna (Beethoven competition, 1969), 2nd in Warsaw (Chopin Competition, 1970), 2nd in Leeds (1975) and was awarded in Lucerne (1973).

Since her successful performance at the Chopin Competition, Ms. Uchida has been developing her international career, appearing in major musical centres in Europe and the United States. She is widely regarded as one of the best interpreters of Mozart’s works of our time. In 1982 she played Mozart’s complete piano sonatas at the Wigmore Hall in London, in a series of five recitals. Three years later (1985–86) with the English Chamber Orchestra she performed all of Mozart’s piano concertos. In 1996, she enjoyed a roaring success with her performance of Harrison Birtwistle’s Antiphonies for Piano and Orchestra, with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Pierre Boulez.

Ms. Uchida’s repertoire focuses on the Classical and Romantic masters and on French Impressionists, with Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Débussy at the core of her programmes.

For over 20 years, Ms. Uchida has been recording for Philips, and her discography now includes Mozart’s complete piano sonatas and concertos, Chopin’s two sonatas (in B flat minor and in B minor), Débussy (12 Etudes), and others composers.

Mitsuko Uchida was a juror at the Queen Elizabeth Competition in Brussels in 1983.

Mitsuko Uchida has not played in Poland since 1970.
