Born in Moscow in 1972, pianist NIKOLAI LUGANSKY studied at the Central School of Music and the Conservatory in Moscow. He won prizes in numerous competitions, including the Bach in Leipzig, the Rachmaninov in Moscow, the Mozarteum's Summer Academy in Salzburg and First Prize in the 1994 Tchaikovsky Competition. He has given recitals at the Moscow Conservatory and St Petersburg Philharmonia, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome and the Konzerthaus in Vienna. His chamber music collaborations include performances with Vadim Repin, Mischa Maisky and Alexander Kniazev. Concerto highlights over the coming seasons include the St Petersburg Philharmonic and Philharmonia orchestras (Yuri Temirkanov), London Philharmonic Orchestra (Vladimir Jurowski and Osmo Vänskä), Philharmoniker Hamburg and Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin (Kent Nagano), San Francisco Symphony and a tour of the United States with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande (Charles Dutoit). His acclaimed recordings include the Chopin piano concertos with Sinfonia Varsovia and Alexander Vedernikov, Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3 and Grieg's Piano Concerto with the Deutsches-Symphonie Orchester Berlin and Kent Nagano, and solo recordings of Liszt and Rachmaninov, the latter receiving an ECHO Klassik Award. In 2013, Lugansky received the honour ‘People's Artist of Russia'. Nikolai Lugansky has appeared at the ‘Chopin and his Europe' Festival in 2009, 2010 and 2013.
