Rafał Blechacz

*30 VI 1985 Nakło nad Notecią

In October 2005, Rafał Blechacz became the undisputed winner of the Fifteenth International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition (second prize not awarded). He also received all the special prizes (for the best performance of mazurkas, polonaise, concerto and sonata) and the audience prize.

Born in 1985, in Nakło nad Notecią, he began learning piano at the age of five. He attended the Artur Rubinstein State School of Music in Bydgoszcz, where he was taught by Professor Jacek Polański. In 2007, he graduated from the piano class of Professor Katarzyna Popowa-Zydroń at the Feliks Nowowiejski Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz.

Taking part in festivals and competitions around the world, Blechacz has won many prizes and distinctions, including First Prize and Grand Prix in the 13th All-Poland Johann Sebastian Bach Competition in Gorzów (1996), Second Prize in the 5th International ‘Artur Rubinstein in Memoriam’ Competition for Young Pianists in Bydgoszcz (2002), and First Prize ex aequo in the 5th International Piano Competition in Hamamatsu, Japan (2003).

The Gold Medal in the Chopin Competition opened the doors to the world’s most prestigious concert halls, including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Musikverein in Vienna, Berlin Philharmonic, Alte Oper in Frankfurt, Herkulessaal in Munich, Salle Pleyel in Paris, Royal Festival Hall and Wigmore Hall in London, Tonhalle in Zurich and La Scala in Milan. He has also performed in leading music festivals, such as those in Salzburg, Verbier and La Roque-d’Anthéron, the Klavier-Festival Ruhr and the Gilmore Festival. His performances are enthusiastically received by audiences and critics alike. He has performed with many symphony orchestras, working with such outstanding conductors as Charles Dutoit, Valery Gergiev, Kent Nagano, David Zinman, Daniel Harding, Trevor Pinnock, Fabio Luisi, Mikhail Pletnev, Jerzy Semkow, Jerzy Maksymiuk, Antoni Wit and Viktor Pablo Perez. In 2010, he received the prestigious Premio Internazionale Accademia Musicale Chigiana (Siena), awarded by an international panel of music critics.

In 2006, he became only the second Pole to sign for Deutsche Grammophon, after Krystian Zimerman. His first disc, featuring Chopin’s preludes (2007), won a platinum disc in Poland within two weeks. It also won the Echo Klassik and Diapason d’or.

His next disc, with sonatas by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, appeared in 2008 and won the recognition of critics and listeners. Blechacz then marked Chopin Year 2010 with a recording of Chopin’s two piano concertos, accompanied by the Concertgebouw Orchestra (named the world’s best orchestra by Gramophone in 2009), under Jerzy Semkow. That disc received the prestigious Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik. In Poland, it soon went double platinum.

His next recording, featuring works by Debussy and Szymanowski, also won great international acclaim. In 2012, it received the Echo Klassik award for best solo album of the year (20th and 21st c.). It was also named Album of the Month by Gramophone and won the Polish record industry’s Fryderyk award 2013 for best classical album.

In 2013, his recording of Chopin polonaises went gold on the day of its release. It also won the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik for best piano music album.

In 2006, Blechacz performed in the ‘Chopin and his Europe’ festival in Warsaw.
