Tomasz Makowski

Dr Tomasz Makowski has been director of the Biblioteka Narodowa [Polish National Library] in Warsaw since March 2007. Associated with the BN since 1994, he previously served as Deputy Director for Academic Affairs and Head of Special Collections.

He heads two separate advisory bodies to the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage: the Digitisation Team and the National Library Resources Committee. He is also deputy chair of the Organising Committee for Zbigniew Herbert Year and head of the editorial committee of Rocznik Biblioteki Narodowej [Yearbook of the Polish National Library].

He is a member of the Polish National Library Board, the Programme Committee of the Polish Book Institute, the Programme Committee of the Fryderyk Chopin Institute in Warsaw, the European Commission's Expert Group on Digitisation and Digital Preservation, the board of The European Library, the Archive Committee under the Managing Director of the Polish State Archives, the Board of the Polish National Museum in Cracow, the Board of the Adam Mickiewicz Literary Museum in Warsaw, the Board of the Museum of the Łazienki Królewskie [Royal Baths Park] in Warsaw, UNESCO's Memory of the World National Committee and the editorial committee of Polish Libraries Today.

The author of three books (1996, 1998, 2005) and over a dozen articles in Polish and foreign periodicals, he is also curator of the first monographic exhibition devoted to the Biblioteka Ordynacji Zamojskiej (2005). He specialises in the history of libraries and manuscript studies.
