Maria João Pires

*23 VII 1944 Lizbona

Maria João Pires was born in Lisbon, in 1944, and gave her first public performance at the age of seven, playing a Mozart concerto in Porto.

At the age of nine, she received the highest Portuguese prize for young musicians. From 1953 to 1960, she studied at the Lisbon Conservatory with Campos Coelho and Francine Benoit, before continuing her studies in Germany, with Rosl Schmid at the Munich Academy of Music and with Karl Engel in Hanover.

Pires performs throughout the world, with such renowned orchestras as the Berliner Philharmoniker, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, London Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris and Wiener Philharmoniker. She is also an active chamber musician. Recently, she has been performing in the greatest international festivals, such as the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, Schubertiade, Edinburgh Festival, BBC Proms and Tanglewood Music Festival, as well as festivals in Ravinia, Montpellier and Lucerne.

She recorded with Erato for fifteen years and subsequently, for the last twenty years, with DGG. Her latest Chopin CD was released in 2009.

Since 1970, Pires has dedicated herself to reflecting on the influence of art on life, community and education, and trying to develop new ways of implementing pedagogic theories within society. She has researched new forms of communication that respect the development of the individual, as opposed to the destructive and materialistic logic of globalisation. In the last ten years, she has held many workshops with students from all round the world, most recently at the Karma Ling Institute in France. In 2005, she formed an experimental theatre, dance and music group, Art Impressions, and together they have produced two projects: Transmissions and Schubertiade. Maria João Pires performed in the ‘Chopin and his Europe’ festival in 2010 and 2012.
