Mikhail Pletnev

*14 IV 1957 Archangielsk

A world-famous conductor, excellent pianist and esteemed composer. He was born in 1957, in Archangelsk, and entered Moscow Conservatory at the age of thirteen. In 1978, he won the International Tchaikovsky Competition, which led to a global career as a concert pianist and performances with leading orchestras. In 1990, with the permission of the then leader of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, Pletnev set up the Russian National Orchestra, the first privately financed, non-state orchestra in Russia. Today, the RNO enjoys an excellent reputation around the world and tours Europe, North America and Asia each year, performing under the baton of its founder and other leading conductors. In 1996, the RNO performed in the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Atlanta. Since 1993, Pletnev has recorded for DGG, and his discs have received various distinctions, including Grammy nominations (he won that award in 2005) and a Gramophone Award for an album of Scarlatti sonatas (1996). He has also earned recognition for his compositional work. In 1998, his Viola Concerto, dedicated to Yuri Bashmet, who gave the work’s first performance, was enthusiastically received by audiences and critics alike. Highly popular are Pletnev’s piano arrangements of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty; they afford artists from around the world an opportunity to display their technical mastery. Pletnev has received many state distinctions and awards, including the President’s Prize and the Russian Order of Merit (2007). He has appeared at ‘Chopin and his Europe’ four times before.
