She studied at the Moscow Conservatoire under Jakov Milstein and won top prize in a number of prestigious international music competitions, including the Queen Elisabeth in Belgium. Her musical career was profoundly marked by her collaboration with Svyatoslav Richter, with whom she played in a piano duo. She shot to fame with her debut at the Salzburg Festival in 1979. Since then, she has performed at international music festivals and prestigious concert halls around the world, working with leading conductors such as Kurt Masur, Colin Davis, Christoph Eschenbach, Kurt Sanderling, Mariss Jansons and Yuri Temirkanov and orchestras such as the New York, London and Berlin philharmonic orchestras, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Camerata Salzburg, Orchestre de Paris and Orchestre National de France. She has given piano recitals in Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, London, Edinburgh, Munich, Zurich and Vienna. As a chamber musician, she has worked with such quartets as the Artemis, Belcea, Borodin and Emerson. She has made numerous recordings for Teldec, receiving a number of prestigious prizes, including the Diapason d’Or and Caecilia Prize. Other significant recordings include Chopin’s concertos with the Czech Philharmonic and Vladimir Ashkenazy, and Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concertos Nos. 2 and 3 with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and Kurt Masur. She received the Midem Classical Award 2007 for her recording of Mendelssohn’s Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 2 with Camerata Salzburg and Ilan Volkov, and an International Classical Music Award 2014 for Paris (eaSonus), featuring works by Ravel, Debussy and Enescu. Recent releases have included a six-disc Schubert album (Warner Classics) and Saudade with works by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov and Shostakovich (eaSonus). In 2006, she received the highest Austrian decoration for her services to Austrian culture.
