Kornel Wolak

The clarinettist Kornel Wolak was born in Białystok into a musical family (his father played the trumpet, his mother was a violinist). He began his musical education with piano lessons at the age of six, before taking up the clarinet six years later. In 2001, he was a scholarship student at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, under the guidance of Eli Eban.

As a soloist, he has worked with such orchestras as the Quebec Symphony Orchestra, Toronto Sinfonietta, Polish Radio Chamber Orchestra and Charleston (North Carolina) Symphony Orchestra, and he also performs regularly with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. As a chamber musician, he has performed with the Wieniawski String Quartet, Glenn Gould String Quartet and Lodos Wind Quintet, and from 2007 to 2009 he was a member of the Quartetto Gelato.   

He has won First Prize in the Royal Conservatory’s Concerto Competition (2006) and also the Presser Music Award. While still a student, he won the Poznań Wind Instruments Competition and Indiana University’s Clarinet Class Competition. A CD recording of Karol Kurpiński’s Clarinet Concerto featuring Kornel Wolak was nominated for one of the Polish record industry’s Fryderyk awards for 2007.

In 2011, he performed during the ‘Chopin and his Europe’ festival in Warsaw.
