Peter Kooij

As a child, he sang in a boys' choir, performing solo soprano parts. He began his musical studies in a violin class and continued his vocal education with Max van Egmond at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam, graduating with honours. He has performed around the world, including at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Musikverein in Vienna, Carnegie Hall in New York, Royal Albert Hall in London, Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Philharmonic in Berlin, Palais Garnier in Paris and Suntory Hall in Tokyo, under the baton of such conductors as Philippe Herreweghe, Ton Koopman, Frans Brüggen, Gustav Leonhardt, René Jacobs, Sigiswald Kuijken, Roger Norrington and Iván Fisher. His rich repertoire covers works by composers ranging from Schütz to Weill, and his performances have been recorded on more than 130 CDs, released by Philips, Sony and Virgin Classics, Harmonia Mundi, Erato, EMI and BIS. With Bach Collegium Japan, under the direction of Masaaki Suzuki, he has recorded the complete Bach cantatas, passions and masses for BIS. He is artistic director of the Ensemble Vocal Européen. From 1991 to 2000, he taught at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam and Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media. Since 2000, he has been a professor of the University of Fine Arts and Music in Tokyo, since 2005 of the Royal Conservatory in Prague, and since 2013 of the University of the Arts in Bremen. He gives masterclass courses in Germany, France, Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Finland and Japan.
