Polish composer, teacher, conductor and publicist. First he took violin lessons withJan Hornziel, next he studied in the Music Institute in Warsaw - violin with Apolinary Kątski, harmony with Stanisław Moniuszko and singing with Franciszek Ciaffe. Between 1872 and 1875 he continued his studies with Fryderyk Kiel (composition) and Richard Wüerst (instrumentation) in Berlin. 

He was working as the orchestra musician in the Grand Tehatre in Warsaw, then in 1870 he became the music correspondent of the journal 'Kurier Warszawski'.   

He was the director of the Warsaw Music Society, well known conductor and organiser. In 1886 he began teaching composition in the Music Institute in Warsaw, where he taught the whole generation of Polish composers. Among his pupils it's worth mentioning: Henryk Melcer, Ludomir Rogowski, Piotr Rytel, Apolinary Szeluto, Wacław Lachman, Stanisław Nawrot, Witold Frieman, Grzegorz Fitelberg, Mieczysław Karłowicz, Karol Szymanowski, Ludomir Różycki.
