Pavel Gililov – 4th Prize winner, 9th International Frederic Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw (1975). Pavel Gililov started learning piano at the age of five. At the age of eight, he played for the first time with orchestra. His musical talent was noticed by Dmitri Kabalevsky, who convinced him to study at the Leningrad Conservatoire. Gililov studied there with Professor Moses Khalfin, graduating with highest honours in 1973.

In 1972 he was awarded 2nd Prize at the 4th All-Russian Piano Competition in Moscow. Three years later in 1975, he came 4th at the Chopin Competition, and in 1978 he was 1st (ex aequo with Angela Hewitt) at the Viotti International Music Competition in Vercelli.

After a string of competition successes, Mr. Gililov began developing his concert career in the Soviet Union and, from 1978 onwards when he emigrated to Germany, in many European countries.

Mr. Gililov has given recitals and appeared as a soloist in symphony concerts. He has also played chamber music with Dmitri Sitkovetsky, Midori, Pierre Amoyal, Mischa Maisky and Boris Pergamenschikov.

During the 1992–1993 season, he played the world première of Krzysztof Meyer's Piano Concerto in Cologne, and subsequently performed the work in several German and Polish cities. In 1995, he took part in the jubilee 50th International Chopin Festival in Duszniki, playing pieces by Mozart, Débussy, Liszt and Chopin.

Aside from his stage career, Mr. Gililov also teaches piano at the Musikhochschule in Cologne. He was juror at the 1st International Carlo Zecchi Piano Competition in Rome (1988).
