Joanna Michna

She graduated with distinction from the piano class of Andrzej Jasiński at Katowice Academy of Music. She pursued post-graduate studies in Warsaw under Jan Ekier and at the Moscow Conservatory under Victor Merzhanov, on a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture and the Arts. A prize-winner of the Polish Piano Competition in Słupsk and the Chopin Competition in Palma de Mallorca.She has performed in many countries of Europe, Asia and Africa, including at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, the Gasteig and Herkulessaal in Munich and the Berlin Philharmonic. She has also taken part in international music festivals in Poland, Germany, Korea, Denmark, Slovakia and Tunisia. The pianist has recorded for radio stations in Poland and Germany and also made more than twenty CD recordings of works from different eras, mostly virtuosic music, including many concert paraphrases by Liszt, Rachmaninov, Thalberg, Tausig, Godowsky and others. A major role in her discography is played by the music of Chopin. 2010 brought the 2-CD album of Chopin's "Complete Works for Piano and Orchestra - without Orchestra", based on the Polish National Edition, under the guidance of Jan Ekier. That album contains all Chopin's works for piano and orchestra in a version for one piano and is the world's first such recording. The pianist lives in Munich.
