Katarzyna Popowa-Zydroń, a pianist and teacher born in Sofia, studied piano at the State College of Music in Poznań, then in Gdańsk and Vienna. She has many successes in piano competitions in Poland and abroad to her name. She has performed in philharmonic halls in Poland and abroad, and also in chamber music.
She teaches piano at the music academies in Gdańsk and Bydgoszcz. Her outstanding pedagogic achievements are attested by prizes won by her pupils in performance competitions (including Rafał Blechacz’s First Prize in the Fifteenth International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 2005 and Paweł Wakarecy’s place in the final of the next edition of the Chopin Competition in 2010).
Katarzyna Popowa-Zydroń runs masterclasses, seminars and courses for teachers. She has been a member of the jury of many Polish and international competitions, including the Chopin Competition and the International Ignacy Jan Paderewski Piano Competition. She is chair of the Ignacy Jan Paderewski Music Society in Bydgoszcz.
The International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition, held in Warsaw every five years, is one of the oldest and most important events of its kind in the world. The 2010 edition of the competition was won by the Russian pianist Yulianna Avdeeva. The next edition, the seventeenth, will be held from 2 to 23 October 2015. The competition is organised by the Fryderyk Chopin Institute.
