The Pianist: Conversations with Garrick Ohlsson

Conversations with the most distinguished pianists of the turn of the 21st century are a new publication series of The Fryderyk Chopin Institute. It is being opened by eminent pianist Garrick Ohlsson, the winner of the 8th Fryderyk Chopin International Piano Competition. In a lengthy interview, he talks with Kamila Stępień-Kutera about the artistic path he has traveled since the time in his early childhood when he tried to find simple melodies on the piano standing in his home, his extraordinary teachers, his meeting with Vladimir Horowitz, his artistic friendships, his ways of working on repertoire and his technique and about music – Chopin, Beethoven, Scriabin, Szymanowski, Bach and greatest masters. The English version of the book will be published during the first months of 2019.

The Fryderyk Chopin Institute plans to publish also subsequent interview books whose protagonists will be, first of all, great winners and laureates of the Chopin Competitions.

Garrick Ohlsson two times differently

Garrick Ohlsson – winner of the 1970 Chopin Competition, one of the greatest Chopin specialists of our time, honored during the August Chopin and His Europe festival with the Gloria Artis Gold Medal – has recorded two Chopin recitals for The Fryderyk Chopin Institute: one on modern piano, the other on period piano. The same program in two different sound versions.

This is now The Fryderyk Chopin Institute’s third such double album – after the recordings of Dang Thai Son (Nocturnes) and Krzysztof Jabłoński (Etudes); these CDs are of extraordinary knowledge-building value, permitting sensitive listeners to acquaint themselves with the particular beauty of early and modern instruments. Garrick Ohlsson’s newest recordings acquaint us more closely with Chopin in two different ways, in both cases with the greatest of expertise in his music.
