Kevin Kenner: Paderewski CD honored by Gramophone magazine

Kevin Kenner: Paderewski CD honored by Gramophone magazine Kevin Kenner: Paderewski CD honored by Gramophone magazine

The CD entitled Kevin Kenner: Paderewski, released by The Fryderyk Chopin Institute, was honored in the October Editor’s Choice ranking of Gramophone magazine as ‘a piano disc to treasure’.

The selection of the best discs in the October edition was made by Martin Cullingford. Among the 12 albums honored was a recording of works by Ignacy Jan Paderewski in the interpretation of Kevin Kenner, winner of the 1990 Chopin Competition. The recording contains outstanding piano works and popular miniatures by the Polish composer, performed on a 1925 Steinway piano that once belonged to Ignacy Jan Paderewski. As Jeremy Nicholas writes, ‘There are at least three good reasons for investing in this fine recording. First, there is the prospect of hearing 10 of Paderewski’s best works for solo piano played on his own instrument […]. Second, there is the inclusion of Paderewski’s Op. 15, officially titled Dans le desert: Tableau musical en forme d’une toccata […]. Third, and most persuasively, there is the playing of Kevin Kenner.’

The Kevin Kenner: Paderewski CD is the first disc in The Fryderyk Chopin Institute’s new Resonance recording series. ‘Resonance’ means reaction, response, reverberation, echo… The music presented in this series is indeed a reverberation, a more or less obvious reaction to the music of Fryderyk Chopin. Clear traces of Chopin’s influence can be found in the music of Ignacy Jan Paderewski.

Recorded at the Witold Lutosławski Concert Studio of Polish Radio, Warsaw, 11–14 December 2017.
