The disc in the series ‘Concerts frozen in time’ contains Karol Kurpiński’s The Battle of Mozhaysk [Bitwa pod Możajskiem], described by the composer as a ‘Grand symphony depicting a battle’, and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Eroica. Both works were performed by the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century under the baton of Frans Brüggen during the ‘Chopin and his Europe’ festival: the recording of Eroica comes from a concert in the first edition of the festival (2005), whilst The Battle of Mozhaysk was prepared at the request of the Fryderyk Chopin Institute in 2013. Thus our disc frames the history of the festival and the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century’s highly significant presence within it. Additionally, it has acquired a very special dimension in that The Battle of Mozhaysk was the last recorded work conducted by Frans Brüggen, who died in August this year.
