Balakirev in Warsaw and Żelazowa Wola - Grzegorz Wiśniewski Balakirev in Warsaw and Żelazowa Wola - Grzegorz Wiśniewski

The outstanding Russian composer, pianist and conductor Mily Balakirev, leader of The Five, was a great enthusiast, an excellent interpreter and an ardent promoter of Fryderyk Chopin's music.

Grzegorz Wiśniewski’s book, tracing the cultural landscape of Poland and Russia during the late nineteenth century, is a colourful and detailed presentation of Balakirev’s two pilgrimages to Żelazowa Wola (1891, 1894), thanks to which Chopin’s birthplace, which by that time had become seriously neglected, was restored to our collective memory.
