The book is a result of a long term research on the life and output of the German pianit and composer, one of the best and with no doubt the favourite Chopin's students. It also broadens the knowledge on the subject, verifies the curretly known and frequently wrong data showing Gutmann from a wrong perspective.
As a result of a meticulous bibliographical and archival query author discovered unknown biographical facts, documents and sources concerning Gutmann's artistic and compositional activities. Press reviews (German and French) and newly discovered compositions bring closer Gutmann as a person and also the era in which he lived and worked.
The book is a biography of Adolf Gutmann (1819-1882) – a man and artist, highly regarded in the 19th century. Particular attention is brought to Gutmann's relationship with Chopin, his place among Chopin's students and friends. Chopin left many proofs of very sincere fondness towards Gutmann; he valued highly Gutmann's piano skills, which he proved by performing a concert with him in Salle Pape in Paris in 1838. He also dedicated Gutmann Scherzo in C sharp minot, Op. 39. Gutmann helped Chopin being his copiest – one of the most important copiests, who made 9 Stichvorlage copiesof Chopin's pieces.
