Published to mark the bicentenary of Fryderyk Chopin’s birth, this book contains photographs depicting the tradition, going back nearly a hundred years, of promoting the music of the greatest Polish composer through the Warsaw-based International Chopin Competitions. The photos show places, people and events creating the unique atmosphere of these artistic Olympics designed to present musical talents from all over the globe. The archive material records the achievements of the most celebrated, some even legendary, interpreters of Chopin’s music, concerts marking important occasions, exhibitions, meetings and behind-the-scenes developments. Captured in the photos is the phenomenon of Chopin’s popularity, the enthusiastic reception of his works by the ever growing number of candidates for the Chopin Competition and the spontaneously responding public.
