One of Chopin’s last songs. A work ‘in folk tone’ composed to a text by Bohdan Zaleski based on a Ukrainian original. This elegy-type song tells of the death of a Cossack and his girl. Adhering to a minor key, the opening bars are given a symbolic accompaniment – in the rhythm of a funeral march.
