The Mazurka in C major that closes opus 6 in the Paris edition (opus 7 in the Leipzig edition) is an oberek. This is a rum little work – some see it as a joke on Chopin’s part. It appears to be a cliché of some oberek from the area around Nieszawa, Kiernozia or Szafarnia. The lively dotted melody, accompanied by just two chords, passes from a C major into a G major area and back again. Back again… endlessly, as this mazurka may be played – like some avant-garde pieces by Erik Satie or John Cage – all night long. It has the structure of a ‘senza fine’ composition – literally without end.
