The fifth Prelude, in D major, appears and disappears – like a brief interlude. The arabesque of the melody appears to proceed, or rather leap, with the motion of a knight on a chessboard. This is another prelude from the etudal category: in a quick tempo, light and brisk like a moto perpetuo, it develops a single textural idea.
