The Prelude in G sharp minor, the twelfth, has a shape and character close to that of an etude. Dark, even gloomy, somewhat obsessive and at times aggressive, it brings a group of six preludes to a distinctive close. It employs internally constrastive texture, dynamics and articulation, and even brings certain features of a balladic tone.
