COMPOSITIONS compositions

The third ‘Nouvelle’ Etude, in D flat major, is different in character, although here too, as in the previous pieces, the two hands proceed in different metres. The right tends towards a 6/8, whilst the left adheres to a distinct 3/4. Yet the main technical problem involves differentiating the articulation in one hand: Chopin has the principal (upper) melody played legato and the counterpoint that accompanies it in the lower voice staccato. In this Etude, as in the others, Chopin bestowed particularly beautiful sonorities on the culminating bars.
