The next etude in this set, in the key of D flat major, has been dubbed the ‘Sixths’ Etude, and the name is entirely appropriate. It proceeds in a lively tempo, presenting mezza voce (half-voice), in full legato, an unbroken sequence of major sixths. It gives the impression of a trail of shimmering colours, rising and falling in turn. Contrary to appearances, this etude is not easy to play. The famous pianist Hans von Bülow called it ‘a cure for stiff fingers’.
