This ballad of a fiancé who returns from a lengthy journey to find that his sweetheart has died was rendered by the poet in the style and form of a Ukrainian dumka (elegy). Chopin followed the suggestion of the text, and his song has the form and rhythm of a dumka. The words are chanted in that simple, regular rhythm. At the same time, however, the piano is charged with illustrating the tale and forging the mood. And it is a surreal and eerie mood. Chromatic undulations of octaves in unison bring a foretaste of the expression that will suffuse the Finale of the B flat minor Sonata.
