The appearance of the sixteenth Prelude brings a new transgression, a new ‘irruption’ of music of a different character. The presto con fuoco at which the B flat minor Prelude speeds along strikes a wild and predatory tone, characteristic of a surrealistic ballade.

Huneker calls this prelude ‘the boldest of the set’. Barely a couple of months later, similar music would enter the doppio movimento in the first movement of the B flat minor Sonata.
