The last of the opus 30 Mazurkas is in C sharp minor. It brings to mind an admission by Adam Mickiewicz, who once thanked Chopin after hearing him play: ‘You transported me’. Chopin begins half-voice, sotto voce. The music then rouses itself from meditation. New themes appear and meander along or soar in ecstasy.

The last bars are soothing, discharging emotions, and in their day they astonished listeners with the harmonic boldness of their sequence of chromatically descending parallel fifths and sevenths. As Jachimecki wittily put it, ‘it must have irritated the pedants of Chopin’s day as much as Théophile Gautier’s red waistcoat at the first performance of Victor Hugo’s Hernani’.
