A.M. Schlesinger

A.M. Schlesinger

A publishing house established by Adolph Martin Schlesinger in Berlin in 1811. Earlier Schlesinger worked for H.G. Nagel's and N. Simrock's publishing houses and before that he had dealt in musical requisites, maps, etc., he had also run a library. At first he published only the works of the Berlin composers, but the valuable conacts within the musical society of the time, among others with Mendelssohn and Weber, enhanced his position on the publishing market. From 1814 he was Weber's main publisher. Owing to the exceptional enterprise of its founder, the publishing house became one of the most important publishing firms in Germany. In 1819 Adolph's son, Maurice, he got into contact with Beethoven whose works he was publishing simultaneously in Berlin and in the company's branch in Paris in the years 1819-1822 and 1827. In 1830 in Schlesinger's publishing house in Berlin a part of J.S.Bach's "St Matthew's Passion" was published for the first time.
