Józef Kazimierz Hofman - son of Kazimierz - Cracow conductor, pianist and composer (1842-1911) and singer Marylda Pindelska. He began playing the piano with his sister and father. He made his debut at the age of 5 and published his first composition at the age of 10. In 1886 as a child prodigy he made a concert trip round Europe. He stopped giving concerts in 1887 and after receiving a scholarship founded by Alfred Corning Clark he went on a 6 years study to Berlin where he studied with Heinrich Urban, Eugene d'Albert, Maurice Moszkowski. Between 1892 and 1894 he had few lessons with Anton Rubinstein. In 1894 he received first prize in the Rubinstein Competition in Hamburg. He gave concerts in almors every major concert hall in Europe, USA and Australia. Between 1912 and 1913, during 10 concerts he performed 256 different pieces.

In 1926 he settled in USA. He was one of the founders of the Curtis Institute of Music in Filadelfia. Among his students there were i.a. Shura Cherkassky and Jorge Bolet. In November 1937 he gave a famous concert in the Metropolitan Opera performing the Piano Concerto in D minor by A. Rubinstein. His last public concert took place in January 1946 in Carnegie Hall.

He was also a composer (alias Michel Dvorsky): wrote 5 piano concertos, symphonies, piano pieces, two sonatas.

He recorded i.a. the Piano Concertos in G major and E flat major by Beethoven, both Chopin's concertos, Piano Concerto in D minor by Rubinstein, solo piano pieces by Beethoven, Schumann, Liszt. From Chopin's output he recorded, apart from two concertos, polonaises Op. 22, 26 No. 2 and Op. 40 No. 1, Ballades in G minor and F minor, Berceuse.
