Jakow Władimirowicz Flier

Jakow Władimirowicz Flier (Fliere, Fliyer), Russian pianist and pedagogue. Between 1923 and 1934 he studied in the Moscow Conservatory with K. Igumnov. In 1936 he won first prize in the Piano Competition in Viena and in 1938 second prize in the Queen Elizabeth International Music Competition (Belgium) and third prize in the Ysaÿe Competition.

Between 1949 and 1959 he focused on the pedagogical work in the Moscow Conservatory and stopped giving public concerts. Among his students there were B. Dawidowicz, R. Szczedrin, M. Pletnev, M. Rudy. In 1965 he was vice chairman of the jury of the 7th International Chopin Piano Competition.

He was best in the romantic repertoire. He performed the works by Schumann, Brahms, Liszt, Rachmaninow, Kabalewski, Chopin. He recorded Chopin's Sonata in B flat minor, Barcarolle and all the mazurkas.
