Robert Gierlach

Bass-baritone. A graduate of Kazimierz Pustelak’s class at Warsaw Academy of Music. He won first prize in the Viotti International Vocal Competition in Vercelli (Italy) and the Audience Prize in the Alfredo Kraus Competition in Las Palmas. He has performed in prestigious opera houses and concert halls in Europe, North America and Japan, including the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Teatro Filarmonico in Verona, Teatro Comunale in Bologna, Teatro dell’Opera in Rome, Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence, Teatro G. Verdi in Trieste and Teatro alla Scala in Milan. He is a very busy concert artist, working with such ensembles as the Warsaw Philharmonic, Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia Varsovia, the philharmonic orchestras of Berlin and Vienna, the Philadelphia Orchestra, Orchestre National de France, I Solisti Veneti, Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Dresdner Rundfunk Orchester and NHK Tokyo Orchestra. He has appeared in many festivals, including the Salzburger Festspiele, BBC Proms, Berliner Festwoche, Schleswig-Holstein Festival, Wratislavia Cantans and Mozart Festival in Warsaw. He has worked with such leading conductors as Simon Rattle, Yehudi Menuhin, Vladimir Jurowski, Valery Gergiev, Christian Thielemann, Christopher Hogwood, Frans Brüggen and Jacek Kaspszyk. For more than a decade, he has performed regularly in the Festival of Songs by Polish Composers and the Festival of European Song, both organised by the Romuald Traugutt Philharmonic. He has won a Polish record industry ‘Fryderyk’ award for a disc of songs by Paweł Łukaszewski and ICMA awards for a recording of Feliks Nowowiejski’s Quo Vadis (the part of St Peter). For several years, he has taught solo singing on the Vocal-Acting Department of the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw.
