Grzegorz Frankowski

A double bassist. A graduate of Cracow Music Academy, he continued his studies with Michael Wolf, a professor of the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin. He has appeared in a trio with Jadwiga Kotnowska and Waldemar Gromolak, and joined Vadim Brodski in the El Tango project. For many years, he performed with Waldemar Malicki in the quintet Tango Bridge. As a soloist and a chamber musician, he has participated in such festivals as the Łańcut Music Festival, Summer at the Warsaw Philharmonic, the Festival of Stars in Międzyzdroje, Music in Old Cracow, Bravo Maestro in Kąśna Dolna, Virtuosity and Musical Jest in Nowy Sącz and ‘Chopin and his Europe’. In 2004, he founded the Piazzoforte string quintet, alongside such outstanding musicians as Paweł Wajrak and Maciej Lulek. The quintet’s disc with Kevin Kenner featuring music by Astor Piazzolla won a ‘Fryderyk’ prize from the Polish record industry (2006) for best chamber music album. From 2006 to 2014, he was music director of the spectacle Tango Piazzolla, in which he performed with his quintet at the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre in Cracow. As double bassist with the Capella Cracoviensis historical orchestra, he has played with such outstanding conductors and soloists as Vincent Dumestre, Alessandro Moccia, Christophe Rousset, Andrew Parrott, Paul Goodwin, Giuliano Carmignola, Peter Hanson and Fabio Bonizzoni. He is currently working with Morphing Baroque of Vienna, which collaborates on a permanent basis with the outstanding countertenor Andreas Scholl and with Charles Medlam (London Baroque). Besides his concert work, Frankowski is also a busy teacher and has written a double bass textbook for children: Szkoła na kontrabas – Mini, Midi, Maxi.
